Code of Conduct

The Reading University Mountaineering Club is an affiliated member of the British Mountaineering Council ( BMC), the National Governing Body for mountaineering.

Participation Statement
"RUMC recognises that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement."

RUMC Rules of Conduct
  1. Each member of the club is responsible for their own safety and that of the other members of the club. If in doubt, it is their responsibility to seek advice from an experienced member of the club.
  2. Inexperienced and new members of the club will be supervised by an experienced member of the club where necessary.
  3. Each party member must ensure that they are adequately clothed and safely equipped for the proposed activity. Appropriate clothing is as follows; footwear which gives good grip and ankle support, waterproofs, clothing which has good insulating properties (ie not jeans, which become uncomfortable and cold when wet), hat and gloves. If in doubt, ask others for advice.
  4. All parties should be aware of current local hazards (eg. snow conditions, avalanche risks, tides.)
  5. Parties venturing in to mountainous areas for walking or climbing should have a relevant map, compass, whistle and torch.
  6. Members use Club equipment entirely at their own risk.
  7. All parties must carry a first aid kit and survival aids (survival bag, spare rations.)
  8. While rock and winter climbing, it is strongly recommended that members wear helmets.
  9. The ratio for non-top roped climbing will not exceed one lead climber for two beginners.
  10. Before climbing, participants must be able to put on a harness, tie in and operate a belay device. Beginners will be supervised, taught and have their belay technique assessed by more experienced members of the club.
  11. When starting to lead, members should be able to place sound protection and set up belays with confidence and safety.
  12. Members participating in club activities should inform a member of committee if they have any medical conditions that should be known of.
  13. It is recommended that members inform their parents or legal guardians of their membership of RUMC.
  14. It is desirable, but not always possible to ensure that each party on the hill has a qualified first aider. As such, the club will encourage all members to become familiar with basic emergency procedures and will encourage members to attend appropriate first aid courses.
  15. The President/Trip Leader has the right to cancel or curtail activities at any time if he or she considers conditions or circumstances constitute an undue risk.
  16. Members of the Club accept that they are governed by United Kingdom law.

"He who lowers off and runs away, will live to climb another day."
