dartmoor just gone...

all in all my veiws of dartmoor have gone up in the world since it was actually an enjoyable experience and though very tiring wasn't to the point of death - mostly helped by avoiding the marshiest routes i guess (though i did try )!

my stove i am deffinitely counting as a success - it is perfectly designed to cook couscous and porridge with just 30ml of meths and 5 min (the meths for this was actually bang on perfect every time), i didnt do so well with a sealed microwave bag of rice but perhaps thats to be expected - had i taken it out of the packet im convinced it would have worked much better! however the most notable success was managing a chicken and mushroom risotto in a gale with 50ml of meths in about 8-10 min and having it perfectly cooked also as a note it turns out that a second mess tin makes by far the best pot stand / wind shield as it also has the benefits of being: more stable, the right height, better protected from the wind, and shielding the grass in a druidic stone circle from being singed! No issues with explosion or spurting meths though unfortunately i shouldnt have taken spare meths as i really didnt need it so = wasted weight

roll mats... well... i used the "integral bivi mat" from my rucksack (very very thin and smaller than my torso!) i have however concluded that im more than comfortable enough in summer without

biviing - do wish i took the bivi-tent so that during the awake periods of rainy-ness i could have had somewhere to shelter (though andy sufficed seemingly very well with a poncho - so long as theirs a helpful stone circle) the alpkit bivi though was excellent and essentially condensation free all weekend gales, rain, mud, rock and wet grass were no match for the bivi bag!

walking poles - the 90 degree elbows trick seems too much effort lifting poles over grasses and plants / hillocks all the time but much shorter seemed to work well... as for the actual benefit though i am unsure as it is hard to prove that i didnt suffer knee / back issues (which i didnt) due to their use although i can deffinitely say that my arms seemed to receive as much work out as my legs!

seal skin socks - very good after several days of wet marshy undergrowth and stream crossings i think i was the only one left with dry feet at the end

water - 1L worked pretty well with the ability to refill it along the route where necessary - turns out the water on dartmoor varies somewhat in suitability but i think we got better at picking suitable sources from the map as we went on

food - well i took a fair amount and ate it all (save for the last lunch since we arrived at the pub in time for food but i think i would have gone quite comfortably with less. also although i had a very lightweight and thought out, balanced diet it was rather dull by the third day! (ie porridge for breakfast, dried saussage, large pack of japenese snack buiscuits, couscous with pepporami for lunch, cashew nuts, soup (uneaten), and rice variation for dinner every day)

bag - i used a 35L+ for the whole weekend and mine is also very comfortable though im continually disapointed by the pure weight of the empty bag

spade - deffinitely need a more sturdy one next time as dartmoor has very stubborn roots!

unnecessary kit taken: small towel (to keep bivi bag dry - but wasnt needed), suncream (did actually catch the sun a little but essentially dartmoor doesnt really know what sun is!), spare clothes (one set of quick drying clothes plus an immunity to smell seemed to suffice), spare meths (my rationing of 30ml per meal plus 30ml spare worked very well so the extra 1/4 bottle i took was pointless), less food...

total weight - well i took a little less and lighter gear than andy (and considerably so than ex-army nick!) though very dispiritingly when lifting one bag in each arm there was very little perceivable difference in weight! it was undeniably much less than i had last time though

also we had a overly friendly cat accompanying us for the first night from Okehampton to our bivi spot (a fair few km) and then all through the rainy night (being very kind and making sure i wake up routinely by walking over the top of me!)... did get a bit worried itd try to follow us too far and get lost or require driving back on sunday!

I mentioned at Bobs last week that my sister was coming down to visit this weekend. For some reason this event seemed to attract a lot of interest!

Anyway for those of you still interested in coming out the plan seems to be an early(ish) dinner at Sweeneys and then a few drinks at some of Reading's finest drinking establishments. In all probability there may be some After Dark action as well but that is down to how the night pans out.

Give me a text if you fancy it
Heather
