Should I join RUMC?

RUMC is an active and friendly club dedicated to helping its members enjoy all aspects of mountaineering. Whether you are interested in climbing, scrambling or walking, we can cater for your needs.

While the majority of our members are students, you don’t have to be associated with the university to join. Heck, you don’t even have to live in Reading! A substantial proportion of the club is comprised of graduates, non-students and overseas visitors, so whether you are a fresher or can’t remember your teens, give us a try.

Experience doesn’t matter either – we provide everyone with all the training and equipment to get started to make learning as easy as possible for you. With the right attitude, beginners can progress extremely quickly. Your efforts may be recognised at the end of the year, with our awards ceremony and an opportunity to be voted onto the committee at the AGM. But you don’t have to participate in everything – if you just want to join us for the odd countryside walk, or are only interested in the trips for instance - we’d still be delighted to have you on board.

At the other end of the spectrum, we have a wealth of experience and ability, with club members competing to a high standard in national BUSA climbing competitions and regularly undertaking ambitious expeditions all over Europe.

When we can’t be found summiting a mountain or halfway up a wall, its more than likely we will be taking time out in The Back of Beyond. Affectionately known as BoBs, we meet in this Wetherspoons pub in the town centre every Tuesday evening to catch up. This is an ideal time to approach us and make friends with other members. With our Social Secretary dedicated to making sure we have a good time, it is no wonder we have gained a reputation for the quality and variety of our socials, which also include comedy nights, barbecues and fancy dress.

So should you join RUMC? YES! Everybody is welcome, all we ask of you is that you are enthusiastic and up for a challenge! Email us at - email - (that's rumountaineering @hotmail.com) to get started. Meanwhile, you can register on this website to uncover extra info and introduce yourself on the forum.
